Dr Lawrence Baker has worked for over 50 years in India, built thousands of low cost homes, numerous community facilities, worked with numerous organizations, including the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) and the National Institute of Design (NID) and established the organization called COSTFORD (Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development) that promotes awareness among people for building low cost houses. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the U.N.O Habitats Award & U.N Roll of Honour in 1992 and I.I.A Babu Rao Maitre Gold Medal in 1994,  Dr. Baker has emerged as a role-model for the young generation of Indian architects. Humble at heart, Dr Baker has reached across to the people in a silent but persuasive manner, the message of cultural identity and professional integrity has earned him the title of 'only Indian Architect in India.'
